eyebrows

by Colleen

Alix has been lamenting the state of her brows lately and I promised her a post on how to achieve the perfect brow.

I prefer a more natural look to brows, the over plucked and overly drawn in brows look quite harsh. Eyebrows certainly do frame a face and should not be overlooked. You just have to look back to the dramatic transformation of Mrs. Obama when she became first lady. Her overlerly arched eyebrows were considered to look angry and she was restyled with a softer and fuller brow, which along with hair styling and clothing choices gave her a softer appearance.

IMG_0863 Ideally the brow should start about the same place as the edge of your nose does. Place your brow pencil vertically along side your nose and see the placement of your brow. If your brow grows further towards the center of your face not to worry, you can leave it as it may suit you or you can use this as a guide to pluck from this point inwards. If you have plucked too far towards the exterior of your brow you may want to consider trying to let this grow in. Pluck your brows from underneath only and in the direction the hair grows. Fill in your eyebrows in your ideal shape and then you can see which hairs you would like to pluck.

IMG_0861 The end of the brow should ideally line up with the side of your nose if you line up your brow pencil with the outer corner of your eye and the edge of your nose. If your brow is shorter you can grow it in and in the meantime pencil it in.

IMG_0865 Start by finding the highest point in the arch of your brow. Use your eyebrow brush to brush the hairs in a downward direction.

IMG_0867This is where you would start penciling in your brow with soft short strokes.

IMG_0869Continue to fill in your brow where it is sparse. I like to start filling in from the bottom of the brow at the inner corner. Continue to use soft upward strokes like you are making little brow hairs.

IMG_0871 While you fill in your brow, brush it upwards from time to time.

IMG_0873 Here is the finished look. Soft but filled in and full. You can finish your brows with a brow mascara or a clear mascara to hold into place or even spray your eyebrow brush with some hairspray and brush your brows into place. For a little lift to the arch of the brow, try a little bit of concealer just under the brow at it’s highest point. I prefer this to a lot of highlighter there as it looks more natural.

Eyebrow pencils are the easiest way to fill in brows but you can also use a stiff eyebrow brush and eyebrow powder which can look even more natural. There are also eyebrow pens that are waterproof and ideal for hot sticky occasions or if eyebrow pencil formulations tend to wear off on your skin.

  1. I learned once to enhance the eyebrow by this exact method and I agree that it makes a big difference. It is natural and easy to do, even for me! I also use a “yogurt” colored pencil or shadow right below the eyebrow (Mac of Benefits) to open up the eye.
My “problem” is that I waxed them to far apart a long time ago, and it always takes forever to let them grow, so I am stuck… I’ll show you when I see you.

    • I know how hard it is to grow eyebrows, I used to have very thick ones and then it was no longer in fashion so they were plucked and now they are kind of in between and they don’t always grow back. But as long as you define the arch like you learned it will make a big difference.
