wake up

by Colleen

As a makeup artist I have very early call times (5 am) and lack of sleep reeks havoc on my skin. Sometimes upon wakening, I look in the bathroom mirror only to discover a lack luster complexion and tired eyes! Actually this is starting to become the norm instead of the exception, so that’s where the wake up your face makeup strategy comes in…

There are several key elements to illuminating a tired face:

    • Splash cold water on your face and immediately afterwards seal it with your day moisturizer and if you have tired eyes (well even if you don’t) some eye cream.( don’t forget to store it in the fridge, it will help to de-puff the eyes)
    • A great face massage, like I used to have in Tokyo when I was modeling, really does stimulate your face and gets the blood moving. So lightly tap tap under your eyes starting from the inner corner towards the the outer and massage your temples.
    • A highlighting pen, like YSL touche éclat, is a very useful tool to bring life to your face. The trick is to apply it to the areas of the face that have shadows. I use it at the outer corner and inner corner of the eyes, in the downward lines that form at the outer corners of the mouth, under the arch of the brows and along the tops of the cheekbones. if you plan on wearing foundation and/or concealer, use the pen after.
    • Next use a pop of bright blush in strategic areas to wake up your complexion. Very lightly blend onto apples of cheeks, center of chin, tip of nose and just above the eyebrows. The trick is to keep it light and well blended to make you appear flushed from within.
    • Apply a tinted lip balm that is a little brighter than your lip color, or even a bright lipstick will do wonders for a tired face.
    • Curl your lashes, to really open your eye. Apply mascara to the top lashes only as applying to the bottom lashes can cast shadows and may rub off during the day counteracting all the effort you made to wake up your face.
    • Breathe deeply and drinks lots of water. Dehydration can lead to dark circles and an overall lethargic feeling.
